Tortuga Carey (Eretmochelys Imbricata)

Hawksbill turtle

Distribution

Hawksbill is usually located near coastal reefs, rocky areas and lagoons of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. They are a migratory specie so they can be seen near the coast of more than 70 countries.

Physical features

Hawksbills are very special, the marginals shields are above the next, are imbricated, have four pairs of side shields. Carapace colors are brown, reddish yellow and white forms of underwater lines make them look beautiful by reflecting sunlight, the plastron is yellow to creamy white; The head is narrow and  jaw, beak shaped , thanks to this can find food among the rocks and coral reefs.

It is among the smallest of the sea turtles, weighing between 40 to 90 kilos and measure up to 62 cm to 1.14m.

Nesting season

Hawksbill mature slowly so it can take 20 to 40 years to reach reproductive age, nest at intervals of 2 to 4 years, however hawksbill turtles found nesting at longer intervals. In a season up to 4 to 5 times every 14 days. Hawksbill eggs are tiny like Loggerhead's; in a nest can be found from 50 to 200 eggs, they seek to beach areas near vegetation to form their nests. In Mexico they nest between the months of April to August mainly in Campeche, Yucatan; in the Pacific from May to October in Nayarit and Jalisco.

They can be found nesting in Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

What feeds?

Mainly feeds on sponges in the Caribbean region, in the Indian Ocean they're omnivorous, in Australia can be seen feeding on large amounts of algae. In addition to sponges and algae, they eat urchins, sea snails, crustaceans and clams.

Amenazas

Threats

According to the UICN, the Hawksbill is Critically Endangered because of the use of its carapace for the production of handcrafts that are sold in several parts of the world mainly in China and Japan. This species has been hunted to the extent of leaving it to the brink of extinction to make combs, ornaments and blades for fighting cocks, etc.

Because they reach reproductive age between 20 to 40 years, many are killed even before they've made their first nesting.

The use of fishing nets is deadly to them, as to look for food are trapped in gill nets and get drown. The use of fishing hooks in a "J"  shape also hurts them after going for the bait, gets hung and die.

The amount of trash reaching the sea is ever increasing: plastic bags, PET bottles, etc. confusing it with food, turtles eat and it produce them choking or get stuck with bags in their digestive tract and die unable to defecate or urinate.

The lights on the beach distract baby sea turtles, because when they born are guided by the light of the moon and stars to get to the ocean, confused with the lights of the hotels, go straight to vegetation what It produces them death.

Uses of beach items such as chairs, jet skis and others are harmful, hotels have no restrictions, leave the chairs on the beach at night and turtles get stuck in them or collide with the tables, get scared and back to the sea without laying their eggs.

The plundering of their nests, besides the poachers, irresponsible people leaving their dogs loose on the beach at night and they attack turtles when are laying eggs or eating the eggs.

Ecological value

Hawksbill helps keeping healthy coral reefs, they transport food in the carapace for other animals and are part of the food chain; when they come up to spawn they transport sea nutrients to the sand.
Because their main food are sponges, they help regulate populations of this species and maintaining healthy reefs as sponges competing for space with corals.

Valor Cultural

Cultural Value

For centuries, sea turtles have been represented in paintings, ceramic works and various crafts in different parts of the world. They have been hunted for centuries to be offered up to governments, the beauty of its carapace is the main reason that has put them in the brink of extinction; in some cultures, it is part of the tradition the consumption of their meat as the main source of protein and leveraging its carapace for making jewelry.

Since the excavations of ancient Egypt is evidence of the use of parts made from hawksbill. More than 2000 years ago, Julio Cesar sent hawksbill carapaces store as principal spoils of their victories. Overexploitation of the species has led to the brink of almost disappear if we do not take necessary measures to preserve them .

How can we help?

* Do not buy for any reason products that are made with parts of tortoise. ( Better in the ocean than in a market)
* Stop buying plastic packaging products,  less damaging to the environment to buy products in bulk.

* Replace hooks type "J" by hooks "G" is less likely that the turtle latches. Use fish instead of squid as bait, so it is less attractive for turtles.

* Do not eat turtle eggs or meat

Tortuga Golfina (Lepidochelys Olivacea)

Olive Ridley

One of the tiniest sea turtles, Olive Ridley is also known as Pacific Lora, in Mexico we call her Golfina because can be  located in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca.

Distribution

Olive Ridley Turtle inhabits tropical areas of the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Atlantic, it weighs just under 45kgs.

Physical features

The skin is olive color, between green and gray, hence its english name is Olive Ridley, carapace is a grayish hue and plastron color is between cream and gray. It is characterized by having 9 to 5 pairs to side shields on the carapace and 7 vertebral shields, if you look at profile appears as if a small hump. They are very small compared to green turtle.

Nesting and Arribada

An Arribada or arribazón is when hundreds of turtles arrive simultaneously to the beaches to lay their eggs in the sand; many years ago on the beaches of Northwest Mexico you could see thousands of ridley turtles, so humans took advantage of this event to steal the eggs deposited in the sand, there were so many turtles that families divided beach into sections to delimit far who would take the extraction of eggs from the nests.

Initially this activity was only for family consumption but when it become business, began to loot more nests while at least a few reached their incubation period so today in Mexico you can only observe this show at some beaches as La Escobilla and Morro Ayuta in Oaxaca, between the months of June to early next year, with peak nesting in the months of September and October,  in Ixtapilla, Michoacán, from July until February or the arrival of Tortuga Lora in Rancho Nuevo, Tamaulipas.

The Arribada or arribazón can also be seen in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and India.

Olive ridleys lay their eggs on average 105 to 120 eggs and the incubation period is 45 to 58 days, regardless of the season of arrival can nest alone for the rest of the year, their nests are not as deep as leatherback's , which makes them vulnerable to predators and looters.

What feeds?

They are carnivorous, their jaws have enough strength to break shells of sea snails and crabs also they eat sea urchins, jellyfish, oysters and clams. They feed away from the shore, however can be seen near the beach in rocky areas; diving up to 150 meters deep looking for crustaceans.

Amenazas

Threats

Their natural predators are numerous, when they're tiny can be eaten by feral dogs, raccoons and coatis. When they born, start a career from nest to the ocean and become food for crabs, gulls and other seabirds. Once at  the sea, they have to deal with big fishes and when they grow are prey for sharks and whales so every single turtle reach adulthood as a true miracle.

Because of its power, the fishermen do not want them close as they are competitive when are looking for seafood so humans kill them. They are also hunted for human consumption.

One of the main reasons why they are endangered is the consumption of their eggs, because their peaceful behaviour, it is easy for humans to steal eggs from nests and so, as a species we are killing off an animal considered sacred to many cultures and with a great importance for the marine ecosystem.

The use of fishing nets is deadly to them, as to look for food are trapped in gill nets and get drown. The use of fishing hooks in a "J" shape also hurts them because after going for the bait gets hung and die.

The amount of waste in the sea is ever increasing so plastic bags, PET bottles, etc. They are mistaking plastic bags and balloons with food and it produce them choking or get stuck in the digestive tract and die unable to defecate or urinate.

Ecological Value

Ridley is very important because it helps to transport food from other animals on the carapace, besides controlling the populations of other animals fed between coral and other marine organisms, thereby preventing their deterioration. Also as part of trophic chains being eaten by sharks and whales.

Valor Cultural

Cultural Value

As we mentioned earlier, some ethnic groups in Mexico have depended on sea turtles for the livelihood of their peoples, another case are Zapotecs, who have historically taken advantage of eggs, meat and turtle skin for their own subsistence and for the trade, unfortunately with population growth has also increased the demand for these products. In Oaxaca is common that local people eat turtle eggs and that's why we, as an Organization are focused through environmental awareness to sensitize populations about the serious damage that we are causing to this species.

A sea turtle egg, even a leatherback turtle has less than 50 CENTS market value, is the price paid for a species that, due to indifference, lack of information and ingrained habits, will soon disappear ...

How can we help?

* Do not buy products made from parts of turtles, still NOT buying turtles: in some parts of Guerrero, Mexico you can see people selling baby sea turtles on the roads. Even knowing that it is an illegal activity and the damage they're causing to babies. Veterinary Centers in Mexico City have reached bay sea turtles from people who bought them on the highway. Unconscionable that they are not pets and animals have the right to be free.

* Stop buying plastic packaging products, best if it is within. More economical and less damaging to the environment to buy products in bulk.

* If you like fishing, replace hooks type "J" by hooks "G" is less likely that the turtle latches and use fish instead of squid as bait, so it is less attractive for turtles.

* Most importantly, do not consume eggs or turtle meat.

Tortuga Caguama (Caretta Caretta)

Loggerhead

Distribution

This species can be found in most of tropical and subtropical waters, nesting Loggerhead turtles arrive in southeastern Mexico, USA, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Greece, Turkey, Oman, Australia and South Africa. As adults remain near the coast.

Physical features

They are distinguished because their head and jaws are larger in proportion to its body than other sea turtles. The carapace is brown and his skin is between yellow and brown; plastron is cream and have five pairs of side shields on the carapace. As adults weigh between 75 to 220 kg, can measure up to 1.20 long. Loggerhead turtles reach reproductive maturity between 15 to 20 years old.

Nesting season

In the United States begin to lay eggs between April and July, in Mexico the nesting season starts in May and ends in August although it may last a little longer. The spawn deposited between 105 to 120 eggs; compared with green turtle eggs, loggerhead's are smaller, similar to a golf ball. Incubation lasts between 55 to 60 days, depending on the temperature of the nest. Each female rises to spawn several times in the same season, we found cases of loggerheads going up to spawn each year while the average spawning is at intervals of three years.

What feeds?

When they're babies, feed on plankton and small organisms floating in the water, once become adults and juveniles are carnivorous and feed shellfish, clams, oysters and crabs. Thanks to the pressure force with their jaws, they can break the shells of snails, lobsters and clams.

Valor cultural

Cultural value

There are some cultures like the people of Seris who have been wise and respectful of this species, although in the past they used to fed with them only selecting a male turtle, the largest and fat, they knew that to keep feeding of this species should allow females reach the sand to lay their eggs and then let the youth reach the reproductive stage. They are so deeply connected with nature that can distinguish a male from a female even at night, by the sounds emitted of each.

Moosnipol legends

Moosnípol is a word of comcáac origin, this ethnic group lives in Sonora, Mexico; It means "Loggerhead Seven Edges". For Seris or comcáac, sea turtles have been part of their culture from the beginning, according to legend a sea turtle was responsible for bringing sand from the seabed to create the land they inhabit. For this reason I chose this name for our organization, representing the work we are doing to publicize this species, which due to ignorance of their biological significance and cultural value, is being lost as a result of human activity and pollution.

On the back of the turtle

Long ago, the Great Spirit of Nature looked down from his home in heaven and earth wanted to do. But where? There was only the vast ocean. Then he saw a giant turtle in the water, as big as an island.
She had forgotten about the turtle created long ago. "Turtle" he said, "Gather your six brothers" it tooks to the tortoise seven days to find them all.
Then the great spirit called them again, "turtles, do a line head to tail, from north to south Yeah, that's it now will remain very close together You will have the honor of carrying the earth on your back, where humans will live"
The Great Spirit formed the earth and from heaven proclaimed that the backs of the turtles are the mountains; they would only have to step aside a bit to create lakes and rivers.
Everything is fine for the most part. Sometimes, however, the brothers turtles fight. The earth rumbles, trees fall and the earth is full of cracks until the brothers make peace again.
